OZY Sentinel: Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
Objective: To maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment through proactive leadership, situational awareness, and community engagement.
1. The Principle of “Vigilant Hospitality”
A Sentinel is not a security guard; they are a community leader. The goal is to provide safety through visibility and relationship-building rather than confrontation.
-
Active Presence: The Sentinel should spend at least 30% of their shift at the front of the store or in the immediate exterior “nuisance” zones (parking lots, walkways).
-
The “Greeting Protocol”: Every individual entering the store or lingering within 50 feet is greeted by name or a respectful nod. This establishes that the area is being watched by a person who cares about the space.
2. Situational Awareness & Nuisance Management
Veterans utilize their training in OAKOC (Observation, Avenues of Approach, Key Terrain, Obstacles, Cover) to manage the store’s footprint.
-
Zone Scanning: Sentinels perform a 360° perimeter walk every 2 hours to identify potential safety hazards, lighting failures, or unauthorized loitering.
-
De-escalation First: If a “nuisance” behavior occurs (shouting, blocking entrances, illegal activity), the Sentinel uses the Listen-Empathize-Address-Resolve (LEAR) model.
-
Professional Bearing: The Sentinel maintains a clean, branded OZY uniform that signals authority and helpfulness.
3. Community Integration & Intelligence
Safety is a byproduct of trust. The Sentinel acts as the “Social Glue” of the neighborhood.
-
Stakeholder Liaison: The Sentinel maintains a direct line of communication with local law enforcement, EMS, and neighborhood associations.
-
The “Safe Zone” Policy: OZY stores are designated safe zones for children, seniors, or anyone feeling threatened in the street. Sentinels are trained to provide a calm harbor and coordinate necessary help.
